What is Acupuncture?
Schedule an AppointmentDoes Acupuncture Work, and What Does Acupuncture Do?
Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and is commonly used to promote natural healing, alleviate pain, and improve overall well-being. It is often used in conjunction with other TCM techniques such as herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and exercise (e.g., tai chi or qigong).
During an acupuncture session, our licensed practitioner will assess the individual’s condition and determine which acupuncture points to target. These points are believed to be located along meridians or pathways that correspond to specific organs or body systems. The practitioner will then gently insert thin needles into these points to various depths, depending on the specific treatment goals.
The needles used in acupuncture are sterile and disposable, ensuring safety and minimizing the risk of infection. The procedure is generally not considered painful, although some individuals may experience mild sensations such as tingling, warmth, or a slight ache at the insertion sites.
The precise mechanisms by which acupuncture works are not fully understood from a scientific perspective. However, several theories suggest that acupuncture may stimulate the release of endorphins (natural pain-relieving chemicals), modulate the nervous system, and promote blood circulation, among other effects.
Acupuncture is commonly used to address a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain (e.g., back pain, headaches), musculoskeletal disorders, digestive issues, respiratory conditions, stress, anxiety, and fertility concerns. It is important to note that while acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained practitioner, it is essential to seek treatment from a licensed professional to ensure proper care and minimize risks.
